California is the most populous state in the United States, and is also the third largest state in the nation. Because of its size, there is a great deal of variety in the climate throughout California. The coast of California is on what is known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” or a region throughout the world that borders the Pacific Ocean and is home to 75% of the world’s volcanoes as well as much of the tsunami and earthquake activity throughout the world. On the flipside of extreme weather is a beautiful and long summer as well as a mild winter that rarely sees temperatures below freezing. While a major concern of homeowners is stability against earthquakes and other natural disasters, much of the state’s population is home to a variety of flooring materials including luxury vinyl, hardwood and natural stone. The warmth throughout much of California sees little need for carpet because homes typically stay warm more easily than in colder parts of the US.
California is renowned for some of the most unique architecture in the country. Frank Lloyd Wright designed many buildings throughout the state including residential homes and the famous Marin Civic Center. Noted architect, Julia Morgan also designed several buildings in California such as the beautiful and historic Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Design trends in California vary from modern and eclectic to southwestern in style, both using a lot of natural stone such as marble and terrazzo.
